The open-world game “Genshin Impact,” a 2D open-world mobile game, has set another record for revenue.
According to data released by the application store analytics firm Sensor Tower, the mobile revenue of the 2D open-world mobile game “Genshin Impact,” developed by miHoYo, has exceeded $4.1 billion, equivalent to approximately 28 billion yuan RMB.
Looking back at “Genshin Impact”’s previous achievements, in 2021, it became the highest-grossing game of the year. In 2022, its total revenue also successfully entered the top three globally, behind Tencent’s “王者荣耀” and “PUBG Mobile.”
Notably, “Genshin Impact” has been in operation for over two years, yet it has consistently maintained a high income growth rate in the global gaming market for an extended period. Compared to other similar games, what specific advantages does “Genshin Impact” have?
Revenue increased by $1 billion in eight months.
According to data from Sensor Tower, China remains the largest market for “Genshin Impact,” with revenue of about $1.4 billion, accounting for 34.6% of total revenue; Japan ranks second, with revenue of approximately $960 million, accounting for 23.2%; the United States and South Korea, respectively, with 16.4% (approximately $860 million) and 6.1% (approximately $250 million) of the total revenue, ranking third and fourth.
In fact, in May 2022, “Genshin Impact” already had an income of over $3 billion. Eight months later, the game’s revenue increased by another $1 billion, reaching $4.1 billion. During this period, “Genshin Impact” underwent six updates, from version 2.6 to 3.3. The 3.0 major version, “Dawn Brought by a Thousand Roses,” was launched on August 24, 2022. Following the 2.0 version’s “Ryujin” region, the game added a new “Nishimura” region, as well as introducing new five-star characters such as Tilenri, Natsukami, and Nelt.
According to Sensor Tower statistics, on the first day of the 3.0 version’s global launch, the revenue topped multiple global game rankings. The revenue from iOS mobile devices alone exceeded $12 million (approximately 82 million yuan), with a growth rate more than three times that of the second-ranked game in the same period, “Maidens of the Gale.”
In November 2022, the 3.2 version of “Genshin Impact” launched the “Nishimura” and popular character “Sakoshi” card pool. According to data from the mobile store analytics platform, Chomium App, the daily revenue during the first half of the 3.2 version’s card pool, from November 2 to 16, saw a continuous increase, reaching a peak on November 4 with daily iOS revenue of nearly $6.3 million (approximately 43 million yuan).
According to the data compiled by 21st Century Economic Report, within just two weeks of the 3.2 version’s card pool launch, “Genshin Impact” created nearly 230 million RMB in revenue, setting a new record for the game’s card pool revenue.
In addition to its high income growth rate, “Genshin Impact” has also shown strong user口碑and external buzz. Currently, the game has a total score of 8.7 on the TapTap game community, with over 4.1 million users rating it, and more than 2 million users giving it a perfect score. In July, miHoYo released the “Genshin Impact: Tales of Teyvat” mid-credits promotional video, which has been viewed over 20.8 million times on Bilibili and 13.6 million times on YouTube.
